ABINGDON UNITED     1       NORTH LEIGH      3

Missed chances Cost United

United dominated seventy minutes  of the match but paid the penalty for not taking their chances and went down to three goals conceded in the last twenty minutes.
As early as the second minute Abingdon had a chance as Scott Griffin hit a shot on the turn and although it lacked power it bobbled awkwardly  just in front of Sam Warrell and the keeper had to scramble the ball away for a corner.
Scott Griffin Score United's Goal
Five minutes later and ex United striker John Mills was left with too much room and a good through ball sent him one on one with James Foster.
The keeper got in front of him and kept on his feet but the forward went to his left and opened up the space for his shot. Just as a goal looked certain Ricky Allaway came flying in and with an outstretched boot took the ball off the toes of Mills.
After 15 minutes Abingdon worked the ball into the area and Matthew Biddle slid in but under pressure got beneath  it and put it over the bar from close in.
A minute later, strong appeals for a home penalty were waved away after Sean McKeon went down and in fact the ref booked him for a dive to most peoples surprise.

United were chasing and stopping Leigh clearing their lines cleanly and they won the ball off the defence and set up Scott Griffin but he shot wide of the goal with the keeper way out of position.
The home side put in another shot that whistled just the wrong side of the upright, and Curtis Angell pounced on some poor control from a defender and had a go on the turn but it was too close to Warrell who took it with ease.
Then Griffin made up for his miss when on 26 minutes he created space as he side stepped a challenge and curled a lovely ball into the far top corner to put Abingdon one up.
Soon after a corner to Abingdon was cleared from under the bar as they kept the pressure on but couldn’t break through for a second score.
The second period began as the first half with United still threatening and a good through ball saw two home players getting in each others way but still they pulled the ball back and into the far side of the goal only to see the Assistant’s flag go up to indicate the ball had earlier gone out of play.
North Leigh were looking to get something on the break and Mills scampered away and let fly but Foster was down to his right to take the ball cleanly, whilst at the other end Warrell had to use his legs to turn away a McKeon shot as he raced goalward.

The North Leigh management had nothing to lose and gambled with a triple substitution after 65 minutes and it worked nearly immediately. Within 5 minutes sub Andy McCabe got on the end of a corner to head powerfully home and the tables turned and it was all the visitors. A shot was headed over from close in by Brian Bowles when it was easier to score and Andy McCabe fired wide from a good opportunity.
Then a shot on 80 minutes was parried away by Foster but Brian Bowles was following up and he smashed the loose ball into the net to put Leigh ahead.
Abingdon came back and a low cross into the six yard box found Biddle but he swept the ball up and it beat everyone except the bar and came down on the line and span out and away with Abingdon half hearted appeals it had crossed the line. North Leigh rubbed salt into the wounds in the final minute with Elliott Osborne-Ricketts creating a yard of space and drove the ball home, low into the far corner and to finish off the scoring and give a bit of a false impression of the game, but if you don’t take your chances you don’t deserve to win.
