The game started with both teams
showing signs of why they have struggled in the league with a
few passes going astray.
The sides needed to put in a good
performance to boost confidence. Slough had a few new signings
on display including Byron Bubb and Luke Evans both who had been
with Champions Farnborough last season.
An early corner for the visitors was headed straight at Lee
Farrow by James Pritchard and taken with ease. With eight minutes
on the clock Laurence Brown got in a good position but although
close he blasted the ball inches over the bar. United’s first
effort was after 10 minutes with Anaclet Odhiambo heading back a
Ryan Curtin cross to Billy Beechers but his header was into the
arms of keeper Jamie Jackson.
For the next twenty minutes Abingdon conspired to try to throw
the game away as their central defence and keeper all seemed to
lose their direction and if Town could have taken their chances
it would have been all over as a contest.
Tom Franklin sent a back pass to Farrow who was under
pressure from a forward and his kick screwed away 20 yards out
to Matthew Platt and he went one on one with the goalie but
pulled his shot wide. United gave it away again with a poor
clearance but Town countered with another poor effort that went
wide.
Then a chip forward to the edge of
the home area had Nathan Woodley making a weak header back and
it fell at the feet of Platt who spurned yet another scoring
opportunity.
Slough were swarming forward sensing they could get ahead and
wrap the game up and on the half hour their goal arrived and the
manner was not really a surprise. A ball was played through the
defence along the ground and Farrow rushed out to thump it clear
but took his eye off the ball as Pritchard ran in. He completely
missed the ball and it ran under his foot and allowed Pritchard
to walk the ball home for a simple tap in. The jitters
were still there for United and a further back pass caused more
panic with Farrow kicking it away out of play as if it was a hot
potato. With half time approaching Platt was wayward with
another chance as he stormed through the middle but once again
was off target and it showed he has only recently returned from
injury and is not match sharp.
United’s best chance of the half came with seconds left to the
break when Ryan Curtin pulled the ball back to Billy Beechers
who side stepped his man and unleashed shot that bounced off the
bar.
Beechers didn’t come out for the second period due to injury and
Luke Holden came on and within five minutes had scored the
equaliser.
A cross into the six yard box was met by his head as he dived to
put it into the roof of the net. The game now went end to end
in at last a typical cup game with United full of commitment and
running.
The visitors John Gray’s set off on a long lone run and his
angled shot beat the keeper but also the far post.
With 20 minutes left Town took a quick free kick and with United
asleep Matthew Platt sprinted away with only the keeper to beat
and as he closed on goal he smashed in a shot that Farrow had to
fly to his right and turn over. With quarter of an hour left
Farrow had to be down quick to block a quick shot from inside
the area and send the ball into the side netting. Holden span
on a ball chipped up to him and his fierce shot was dropped by
Jackson but he was quick to gather at the second attempt.
Slough had a player taken off with ten minutes left with a
severe sprained ankle and with all substitutes on the field had
to hold on as Abingdon looked to pinch the result. With a
minute left Jamie Brooks took on and beat two challengers and as
he raced into the area drilled the ball in low to the far post.
Odhiambo slid in and steered the ball home as a huge cheer went
up and then subsided as everyone realised the Assistant had
given him offside. It was a correct decision and so to a replay
on Tuesday night.
