The
reserves finished off the season with a comprehensive 5-0 victory
over a
Henley
Town
side who were weakened with injuries and first team call ups.
Abingdon were quick out the blocks and almost
made the perfect start but Adam Oram was unable to squeeze the ball
past the keeper from a goal mouth scramble in the opening minute.
Abingdon continued to attack and Nigel Swafford was narrowly wide
with a powerful header from a pinpoint Aaron Andrews cross in the 20th
minute and with the pressure still being maintained Oram again went
close in the 25th
minute but this time was denied by a fine save from the
Henley
keeper. After this constant pressure and no goals Henley began to
get back in to the game with the impressive Toby Nowell and the
dangerous Hobbs - Newham partnership forcing Adam Lonsdale in to a
couple of smart saves. With Abingdon needing the 3 points to secure
the runners up spot it looked as if the nerves were setting in but
in the 32nd
minute James Organ
powerfully headed home a far post Tom Hemmings corner. So Abingdon
relaxed and in the 40th
minute Swafford again went close from an excellent Andrews cross but
only minutes later and
Liam Barson got
Abingdons second from some excellent Tony Booker and Organ build up
play when he smashed home an Oram cut back.
At the start of the second half both teams
knew that the next goal would be crucial and within 30 seconds
Swafford gave Abingdon a dream
start to the half when he latched on to a through ball and arrowed
his shot in to the far corner. This effectively killed the game with
Henley on a damage limitation exercise and Abingdon content with
their 3 goal cushion and there was little goalmouth incident until
Oram was dragged down by the
Henley
keeper in the 75th
minute. Paul Druce smashed home the penalty but encroachment from
both teams meant that it had to be retaken and on the second attempt
the keeper made a fine save but Druce followed up to smash the ball
home. Credit to Henley who never gave up and Nowell was denied by
another excellent Lonsdale save and some wayward finishing meant
that it was not to be Henleys evening and this became even more
apparent in the closing minutes when Hemmings out sprinted the
Henley defence and tucked his shot inside the far post to give
Abingdon a flattering 5-0 victory.
An excellent
end to the season with a 13 game unbeaten run seeing the reserves
snatch the runners up spot and capping a fine season for a team with
an average age of just 20. Well done lads and its been a pleasure to
see a talented group of individuals mature and develop in to a team
that has adapted so quickly throughout the season to a much more
aggressive mens game than which you were used too (with the help of
a few old heads).
